Chapter 14
TOM AND THE MOTORCYCLE
Tom was back from Las Vegas visiting us again. Tom was always such a relief to have in the house. One day, Tom rode his motorcycle down to the store to grab a few groceries. It was toward the late afternoon, and then we heard sirens and fire trucks very close to the house. Jami and I ran outside to see if we could see anything, and it turned out Tom was on the ground and had crashed his motorcycle. There were people around him, trying to keep him still, and there was a girl around ten years old on the ground next to her bike, and she was bleeding from her leg.
The ambulance came roaring down the street with the sirens and lights on. The paramedics took Tom to the hospital where they put him in a medically induced coma for two weeks. No one had any idea of why or what had exactly happened to cause the crash. Unexpectedly, one day Tom opened his eyes and started screaming from the pain through out his body. He had suffered major injuries, and not even the doctors knew how to handle the numerous traumas throughout his body. Tom awoke to find himself in a room with other men who were in as serious condition as himself from crashes. When Tom was stable and able to talk about the crash, we found out how it had occurred.
Tom had been just coming down the street and doing around 25 mph when he saw two girls on their bikes further down our street. He beeped the horn on his motorcycle, and the girls pulled over on their bicycles. Just as Tom was ready to pass them, one of the girls got back on her bike and drove right in front of Tom and stopped. The girl just stood and stared at him with a blank expression. Tom only had seconds to react. He ditched the bike and laid it down or he would have killed her for sure, he said. In the 1980s, helmets were not a Law, and most people did not wear them. So when Tom crashed, he hit the pavement head first with his motorcycle rolling on him too. The little girl was hit on her lower leg area and required stitches.
To this day, Tom has no idea what made that girl just drive right in front of him when she had been at the curb waiting for him to pass. Tom said he remembered that she just had a blank look on her face as she rode her bike and stopped in front of him. It made no sense why the little girl did that.It was almost as if she was in some form of a trance and not in control of what she was doing by riding directly into the path of Tom and then stopping. It took Tom months to recover from so many injuries.
The motorcycle was sold to another young man who wanted to repair it since it was not totaled.
